Making the most of a problem

My wife had some friends around this morning. She had invited them a few weeks ago and she wasn’t sure they would turn up because of all the snow and consequent challenges with the roads we’ve been experiencing this week.

When the first person arrived I was upstairs and I overheard the opening conversation with my wife. Referring to the weather, my wife’s friend said “this is a bit of a song and dance isn’t it“. I stopped and thought for a minute about that phrase “song and dance”. A phrase I’ve heard often, a phrase I’ve become very familiar with but often in a kind of over-reactive context (like “Don’t make a song and dance about it”). And yet, I thought to myself, this can be used as a positive way of thinking about some of our problems. This reminded me of an excellent coach I know. She often advises her clients to “dance around it” when thinking about a challenge they are trying to overcome, or when they’ve become ‘stuck’ or down about something.

So maybe there’s a lesson here for us. Perhaps we can get a better perspective on a problem or issue we might have by thinking of it as a bit of a “song and dance” rather than a nasty negative. A good one to try and visualise and maybe an aid to finding the opportunity in the problem (they usually have one if we look deep enough).

Why not give it a try the next time something niggles you. It might even bring a smile to your face 🙂 What’s the song? What’s the dance? This could be interesting….

A lovely way to shift the habitual thought processes – I’m off to the cellar singing and dancing to find some missing paperwork for my VAT return.

Thank you for a lovely reminder Frank.
